Anix Computers Bristol (2000-present)
Principal Consultant
- Project management of various infrastructure projects including large SAP
implementations for both NT and Unix, Tivoli Systems Management, firewall and VPN solutions
- Product development for IT security services specialising in VPN deployment
- Pre-sales consultancy and bid team management for Infrastructure, networking and security proposals
- Developing sales strategy for information security and networking products and Services
- Brought organisation to Cisco Premier reseller status, Checkpoint Licenced Partner and Nokia accredited reseller status
- Designed Anix internal network infrastructure to provide and support ASP
and Web hosting services.
M&G Reinsurance company plc then Swiss Re (buy-out in 1998)
1973–1999
Communications Consultant (1999-1999)
(self-employed contractor overseeing various projects)
- Dial-in/Dial-out strategy planning improving security of network and
facilitating mobile and home working.
- Several New Office implementations involving budgeting for communications
equipment and new data cabling delivering increased network reliability.
Planned the implementations using Microsoft Project, co-ordinating
resources and monitoring progress through to implementation.
- Study to consider implementation of ATM network backbone.
- Hand over to newly recruited management.
Communications Infrastructure Manager (1991-1999)
- Running a small team (5) managing all aspects of LAN/WAN and mainframe
communications.
- Outsourced the voice network via a £100,000 p.a. contract reducing
costs by 20% and providing better facilities (DDI, voicemail etc.).
- Designed and implemented reliable LAN Infrastructure, implementing structured
cabling, token ring switching improving reliability and performance by 50%.
- Negotiated £250,000 global frame relay contract, finally awarded to BT.
- Implemented Cisco based global frame relay contract with BT enabling global
email and Lotus Notes deployment.
- Re-implemented UK/Global frame relay network with Equant/SITA after takeover.
- Designed Implemented LAN/WAN infrastructure for four major London buildings.
- Integrated LAN/WAN infrastructures improving reliability by over 100%.
- Employed contractors to implement Tivoli network management at the Swiss Re
drastically improving quality of service, fault identification and
resolution.
- Negotiated ISP contract with firewalls providing the basis for
Intranet, Extranet and e-commerce systems.
- Member of international committee to decide the network supplier for
Reinsurance and Insurance community network (RINET).
- Watching brief for all aspects of new technology that might bring benefit to the
organisation (e.g. Neural networks, voice recognition, pen computing etc.).
- Researched, proposed and implemented and arranged training for
video-conferencing on a worldwide basis.
- Managed closedown and removal of old systems and infrastructure.
Information Centre Manager (1986-1991)
- Managed the introduction of PCs into the organisation.
- Ran team providing early help desk and training support for PC users.
- Implemented SQL 'information database' to support end-user-computing.
- Developed end-user computing strategy and tools bringing computing power to
the hands of real users for the first time.
- Designed training packages in support of end-user-computing.
Database Administrator (1982-1986)
- Ran database management team involved in the logical as well as physical
design of DL/1 databases.
- Maintained DL/1 databases.
- Designed and implemented batch and online database backup procedures.
Systems Analyst (1977-1982)
- Designed and implemented company's first online system providing lookup
of over one million index of lives assured, reducing turnaround time for the
processing of Life Reinsurance.
- Ran team of three analysts developing wide variety of applications.
Programmer (1973-1977)
- Developed and maintained IBM Assembler and Cobol applications mainly for
the Life Reinsurance part of the business.
